In the past 10 years video games have come to be part of our lives, and even more in the lives of students. It is not uncommon to students have gadgets including laptops, cell phones and especially "video games". Competition is inherent in the structure of the game, "gamers” are always competing because it is their motivational factor (SIMPSON, 2005). The competition does not surpass the collaboration (GEE, 2003); in fact, collaboration is integral to achieving success. The player is involved with the result, he or she has an emotional rapport with the result, if he or she wins, is happy if he or she loses is sad. This Juul calls "the contract of the game” which the player joins at start of each game (2003). Transported to the classroom, boys and girls have the role of "student", and this is defined by the teacher. Also, the scholar may have several teachers in one day, and their personal definition depends on the objectives of the class and subject taught. For some students, the teacher imposing rules that the pupil was not displayed as part of their identity as an apprentice. In classrooms, the answer is almost never given and is related to anything relevant. There is always a right answer and one way to reach it as "suggestions" ("hints" that video games provide hands full) are not tolerated in the classroom for any reason. An important fact is that rarely, a student associated justice with school. (SIMPSON 2005). Digital photography has taken a boom and is part of the curricula in many universities as an art form. Although there are plenty of tutorials and manuals, there are no applications for taking photographs in real time in a simulating environment. Create an application that motivates students to learn digital photography using video games can lead to appropriate results (PETERSON, 2004), even surprising results (AGUILERA Y MENDIZ, 2003). This new media allows teachers to be close to their students’ skills and gives students a change of stimulus, a good known one (videogames), and offers a competition where they will come to an end, after several steps that help them to learn

Semantics for incident identification and resolution reports

    Get PDF
In order to achieve a safe and systematic treatment of security protocols, organizations release a number of technical briefings describing how to detect and manage security incidents. A critical issue is that this document set may suffer from semantic deficiencies, mainly due to ambiguity or different granularity levels of description and analysis. An approach to face this problem is the use of semantic methodologies in order to provide better Knowledge Externalization from incident protocols management. In this article, we propose a method based on semantic techniques for both, analyzing and specifying (meta)security requirements on protocols used for solving security incidents. This would allow specialist getting better documentation on their intangible knowledge about them.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2013-41086-

Heuristic method based on voting for extrinsic orientation through image epipolarization

    Get PDF
[EN] Traditionally, the stereo-pair rectification, also known as epipolarization problem, (i.e., the projection of both images onto a common image plane) is solved once both intrinsic (interior) and extrinsic (exterior) orientation parameters are known. A heuristic method is proposed to solve both the extrinsic orientation problem and the epipolarization problem in just one single step. The algorithm uses the main property of a coplanar stereopair as fitness criteria: null vertical parallax between corresponding points to achieve the best stereopair. Using an iterative approach, each pair of corresponding points will vote for a rotation axis that may reduce vertical parallax. The votes will be weighted, the rotation applied, and an iteration will be carried out, until the vertical parallax residual error is below a threshold. The algorithm performance and accuracy are checked using both simulated and real case examples. In addition, its results are compared with those obtained using a traditional nonlinear least-squares adjustment based on the coplanarity condition. The heuristic methodology is robust, fast, and yields optimal results. The authors gratefully acknowledge the support from the Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad to the Project No. HAR2014-59873-R.Martín, S.; Lerma García, JL.; Uzkeda, H. Lumped-Element Balun for UHF UWB Printed Balanced Antennas

    Get PDF
A semi-lumped balun transformer for UHF and ultrawideband (UWB) dipole antennas is presented in this paper. The proposed structure is based on two asymmetric filters that also transform the variable antenna impedance into the desired source impedance. These asymmetric filters make use of a binomial impedance transformer in each filter section. The asymmetric filters (one low pass filter, LPF, and other high pass filter, HPF) allow the balun bandwidth to be increased while the binomial transformer matches the variable balanced dipole impedance. In this way the ripple in the balun response due to the variation of the UWB dipole impedance is reduced. A balun for a UHF and UWB dipole antenna working from 220 to 820 MHz (bandwidth of 4:1) has been achieved with losses lower than 1 dB. These types of baluns are particularly useful in the low microwave frequency band

Rescue surgery (surgical repositioning) of impacted lower second molars

The impaction of lower second molars, given that its incidence is 0.03 to 0.21%, is a rare complication in tooth eruption. It has been detected more often in unilateral form than bilateral and is more common in the mandible than in the maxillary. It has a slight predilection for males, and mesial inclination ismore usual. A wide variety of therapeutic approaches have been published, basically referring to surgical techniques, independent or complemented by means of orthodontic technical aids, with the aim of placing the tooth in the correct position, and which are encompassed under the concept of surgical rescue. In cases resolved with repositioning of an impacted tooth, prophylactic root extraction has been proposed as obligatory. We present a case of a 12 and a half year old patient referred to the University of Seville due to non-eruption of the left lower second molar. The patient was referred by her orthodontist, who detected the impaction before starting orthodontic treatment. The orthodontist requested that, if it was possible, we did not extract the root of the third molar, because its eruption would be feasible in the future (there would be sufficient space in the arch). The spaces available were measured and we decided to attempt the repositioning of the impacted tooth without extracting the root of the wisdom tooth, which was carried out successfully

The use of ideal equivalent circuits which represent the electrical response of a physical device is a very common practice in microwave and millimeter wave circuit design. However, these equivalent circuit models only get accurate results in a certain frequency range. In this document, some basic devices have been analyzed, with several equivalent circuit models for each one. Physical devices have been manufactured and measured, and measurements have been compared with the responses obtained from the equivalent models. From this comparison, it?s possible to see what equivalent models are more advisable in each case and which are their limitations

Effect of Symmetrically Switched Rectifier Topologies on the Frequency Regulation of Standalone Micro-Hydro Power Plants

Micro-hydro power plants (μHPPs) are a major energy source in grid-isolated zones because they do not require reservoirs and dams to be built. μHPPs operate in a standalone mode, but a continuously varying load generates voltage unbalances and frequency fluctuations which can cause long-term damage to plant components. One method of frequency regulation is the use of alternating current-alternating current (AC-AC) converters as an electronic load controller (ELC). The disadvantage of AC-AC converters is reactive power consumption with the associated decrease in both the power factor and the capacity of the alternator to deliver current. To avoid this disadvantage, we proposed two rectifier topologies combined with symmetrical switching. However, the performance of the frequency regulation loop with each topology remains unknown. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of the frequency regulation loop when each topology, with a symmetrical switching form, was inserted. A MATLAB® model was implemented to simulate the frequency loop. The results from a μHPP case study in a small Cuban rural community called ‘Los Gallegos’ showed that the performance of the frequency regulation loop using the proposed topologies satisfied the standard frequency regulation and increased both the power factor and current delivery capabilities of the alternator. This contribution is a result of a cooperation between the APlied Electronic Research Team (APERT) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), supported by the Department of Education of the Basque Government, within the fund for research groups of the Basque university system IT978-16, the Power Electronics Control in Energy and Motion Systems group (PECEM) at the University of Oriente, and the IRIS project for Cuban energy transformation. Detectors designing is a key aspect for the development of the new millimeter wave systems. In this paper two detectors in microstrip technology are presented. They use zero bias Schottky diodes to detect signals from low frequency to 40 GHz. High sensibility, flat frequency response and ultrabroadband are the main features of these designs. They are also cheap and easy to mount because they have been built using microstrip technology. This paper explains most technological questions which must be taken into account to design such detectors
